Commodity Price Trends

Gallium Price Trend

As a coolant, water filter, and means of producing “green” hydrogen, gallium is a metal with a future. It is no wonder that prices exploded in the face of short-term delivery stops. Import has only recently become possible again. Temporary dips in the price curve, such as the one caused by the lifting of the Chinese export ban, remain excellent buying opportunities for a good 8 to 10 years.

Indium Price Trend

Supply chains are recovering and there is more high-tech electronics available for purchase again. And indium is also part of it: as a component of cell phones and flat screens, it has long-term potential as an investment. Occasional dips in the price curve indicate excellent buying opportunities for a good 8 to 10 years.

Rhenium Price Trend

Rhenium is one of the rarest technology metals found in the Earth’s crust. For this reason alone, price drops offer a good opportunity to buy more. The recovering aviation industry offers this metal good prospects, as does its increasing use for liquid gas turbines and applications in medicine.

Germanium Price Trend

Supply chains are recovering, and the expansion of 4G, 5G, and very soon likely 6G is progressing accordingly fast. Since germanium is not only used for fiber optic cables but is also an important “defense metal” for national security, price reductions offer excellent investment opportunities for at least the next 8 to 10 years.

Hafnium Price Trend

The slump in aviation during the pandemic led to a low hafnium price, which is currently beginning to correct itself. Supply chains are recovering and more flights are being booked again. Hafnium continues to be required for heat-resistant alloys, so that price dips still offer excellent buying opportunities for a good 8 to 10 years.

Dysprosium Oxide Price Trend

This silvery, shimmering rare earth increases the magnetic pull of magnets. In addition, dysprosium oxide is a component of many alloys, such as in the cladding of nuclear reactors.

Gadolinium Oxide Price Trend

Injected gadolinium compounds are used as contrast agents in MRI scans. Gadolinium oxide is also found in X-ray machines.

Neodymium Oxide Price Trend

This light rare earth was our price increase winner in 2021. One reason for this is the use of neodymium oxide in the permanent magnets of wind turbines.

Scandium Oxide Price Trend

Hard and light – that is how alloys should be in both bicycle and aircraft construction. This is where scandium oxide is used, as well as in stadium floodlights.

Terbium Oxide Price Trend

This soft, malleable rare earth metal was first discovered in Ytterby. Terbium oxide is used in semiconductors and to protect magnets from demagnetization.

Yttrium Oxide Price Trend

Yttrium oxide plays a key role in many high-tech sectors. It is primarily used as a stabilizer for zirconium oxide ceramics, in phosphors for displays/LEDs, as high-temperature resistant technical ceramics, and as a matrix material for laser and superconductor applications.

Praseodymium Oxide Price Trend

Praseodymium oxide is a central material for high-performance permanent magnets, which are indispensable in electric motors and wind turbines. The heavy dependence on Chinese supply chains regularly causes price fluctuations. As demand rises in the long term due to electromobility and renewable energies, temporary declines continue to offer attractive buying opportunities.

Antimony Price Trend

Due to its limited availability and heavy dependence on imports, antimony is considered a particularly critical commodity. In recent years, there have been repeated significant price fluctuations, primarily because China controls the majority of global production. At the same time, demand is constantly increasing, particularly due to the growing use of antimony trioxide in flame retardants, electronics and batteries. The German raw materials agency DERA points out that demand could grow significantly faster than global refined sugar production in the future – a scenario that is likely to lead to bottlenecks and further price increases in the long term.

“Rising commodity prices are currently one reason for the high inflation rates. That is why an investment in commodities is also the best protection against currency devaluation.”
