Rhenium rally – China’s buying spree is Europe’s opportunity

Diagramm Preisentwicklung Rhenium

A sudden and rapid boom in demand from China has caused the price of rhenium to skyrocket within a few weeks. In the last month alone, the rare metal increased by 17.5%—a record rise triggered by China’s targeted stockpiling for its emerging aviation and high-tech industries. With 26 tons of imports, China has recorded the largest jump in demand in years within a short period, purchasing nearly half of the annual global production.

Rarity and applications are driving value

Rhenium remains one of the rarest and most sought-after metals—with an annual global production of only around 65 tons, it is rarer than gold. Its extraordinary heat resistance makes it indispensable for superalloys in modern aircraft engines, as well as in new developments such as high-performance catalysts in petrochemistry and innovative applications in medical technology.

Bottlenecks due to a complex supply chain

Supply is extremely tight: rhenium is produced exclusively as a by-product of molybdenum extraction in copper mines. This three-stage dependency makes production inflexible—even major producers such as those in Chile or the US can hardly respond to sudden spikes in demand. Even small market changes are enough to send prices soaring worldwide.

A strategic window for Europe and private investors

The key difference from many other high-tech metals: China controls neither the mining nor the refining of rhenium. The main producing countries—above all Chile and the US—lie outside China’s spheres of influence. This opens up a rare opportunity for Europe to accelerate the build-up of its own strategic reserves and, together with private investors, secure access to a metal that is essential for aviation, energy and high-tech.

Rhenium is one of the few strategic metals where Europe can not only catch up, but become a supplier—with fully stocked inventories.
