Indium Superconductor Accelerates Quantum Computers

Researchers at Fraunhofer IZM in Berlin have succeeded in bringing quantum computers closer to market readiness. They achieved this by revising the superconducting solder contacts, known as “indium bumps”.

Indium is an important material in the field of quantum computing because extremely cold-resistant superconductors can be developed from it. Until now, however, the indium sat on a nickel base, whose magnetic field caused increased movement of the qubits and thus led to calculation errors. By replacing the base material with a different one, the researchers have enabled faster and more error-free computers.

Quantum computers process massive datasets, create simulations, or determine probabilities. This allows them to solve problems in seconds that would take conventional computers days or weeks. Their ability to provide highly accurate forecasts could benefit optimized logistics and traffic systems, the efficient development of medical active ingredients through lifelike molecular modeling, or meticulous encryption for the banking sector.

Researchers expect freely programmable quantum computers no earlier than 2030. Thanks to the new indium bumps, however, this could happen significantly sooner. You can, however, invest in indium today, including tax-free purchase and tax-free profits after a one-year holding period.
