Hydrogen – Key Pillar of the Energy Transition!

DERA Themenheft-01-22_Mineralische Rohstoffe für die Wasserelektrolyse

“Hot” Topic: Solid Oxide Electrolysis: Green hydrogen is produced most efficiently with rare earths and temperatures up to 850°C. Theoretical efficiencies of between 80% and 90%—that is what SOEL (solid oxide electrolysis) promises compared with the other electrolysis processes currently used to produce green hydrogen.

Theoretical efficiencies between 80 and 90% – this is what SOEL (Solid Oxide Electrolysis) promises compared to other electrolysis processes currently used to produce green hydrogen. A special electrolyte made of scandium (or yttrium)-doped zirconium dioxide serves as an oxygen ion-conducting solid. In addition, the diffusion barrier of the electrolyte, an important protection against chemical reactions, often contains the rare earths gadolinium oxide and cerium oxide. These elements are also found in the cathode.

Due to its high temperature level, solid oxide electrolysis can be effectively combined with industrial waste heat and other thermal applications. This also makes SOEL a very promising future technology.

We stock the rare earths cerium oxide, scandium oxide, yttrium oxide, and gadolinium oxide required for this process, with the latter two also available as potential investment assets – including tax-free storage and sales, and security according to the latest standards.
