Faster, smarter, more durable – Saxony invests in the future of the computer chip

The microelectronic development by researchers from a Dresden university spin-off (FMC) is up to 1,000 times faster than commercial flash memory. Their ferromagnetic hafnium memory chips extend smartphone battery life, increase hard drive speed, and improve the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Renowned high-tech startup funds such as Bosch, Hynix, and Merck have therefore invested almost 26 million euros in the company. They are thus investing in an important industrial sector that is increasingly returning to the Saxon capital. In addition to the world’s most important chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), FMC is now also considering its own production. Should the founders implement these plans, Dresden would have a chip factory with the most modern technology, originating from local research.
All of this is also made possible by the technology metal hafnium. This critical element promises a bright future not only for Dresden as an industrial location but also for investors. The incredible price surges that the metal has experienced in recent months prove it.
