Noble Elements GmbH expresses concern over the Chinese government’s recent decision to further regulate the export of rare earths. This measure is expected to have a significant impact on the manufacturing sector in Germany and Europe, as a sharp increase in prices and a shortage of these vital commodities are anticipated.

China, which already placed gallium and germanium on a list of commodities subject to stricter regulation in 2023, has now further tightened controls on rare earths. This is a clear signal that the German and European economies urgently need to find alternative supply chains outside of China.

“The Chinese government’s decision to further tighten export controls on rare earths does not surprise us,” explains Andreas Kroll, Managing Director of Noble Elements GmbH. “We have repeatedly warned about this development in the past. The current measure underscores the necessity for Germany and Europe to reduce their dependence on Chinese raw materials and develop alternative procurement sources.”

Rare earths are essential components in many high-tech products, from electronic devices to renewable energy and defense technologies. A shortage or price increase of these commodities, which in China’s recent measures reached over 50% for gallium, for example, could have far-reaching consequences for the competitiveness and innovative capacity of European industry.

Noble Elements GmbH will continue to work closely with its partners and customers to mitigate the effects of these new export controls and identify alternative supply chains. “It is now more important than ever that we pool our efforts and find joint solutions to ensure the security of supply for these critical commodities,” emphasizes Andreas Kroll.

Noble Elements GmbH, which is itself engaged in a South African project for the mining and processing of rare earths, for example, will closely monitor the development of export controls in China and inform its clients about all relevant changes and their potential impacts.
